Housing Bill voted down by CA Senate
SB 50, a bill to facilitate the construction of much-needed affordable housing in California, unfortunately was defeated by a vote of 18-15 by the state senate on January 30. NEII was a supporter of SB 50 and looks forward to working with the bill sponsor, Senator Scott Weiner, as he develops a substitute measure to promote multi-family housing construction, while keeping unnecessary costs to a minimum.
To further address the affordable housing crisis in California, NEII is working separately to ensure that updates to the state’s elevator code do not stray too far away from the national model standards. Following the national model codes with few if any modifications spurs real estate development, avoids unnecessary construction delays and prevents increased costs for elevator installation and maintenance - all while promoting the highest level of safety.
California should take a holistic approach to fixing its housing crisis, starting with the passage of legislation to enable the construction of new affordable multi-family housing projects and the adoption of updated elevator codes that align with the national model elevator codes.
