Dylan Isenberg to Depart NEII in August

After more than three years working on behalf of NEII’s member companies, Dylan Isenberg will be departing the association in mid-August to attend Temple University Beasley School of Law.

His achievements passing legislation in Louisiana, negotiating an amnesty for civil fines in Massachusetts and assisting the companies on tariff issues are secondary to the relationships he built with his NEII colleagues and the elevator company employees he has worked with to advance the industry's goals. To pull a quote from his admissions essay, “each time I pass the elevators on campus, I will be reminded of my journey to law school and inspired to continue traveling upwards.”

Please reach out to Dylan to wish him well at school. An announcement will be forthcoming regarding NEII’s next Director of Government Affairs.

Coronavirus Updates

As most states take steps toward reopening, some are taking precautionary steps to slow the pace of reopening and/or initiate mask requirements. There are now more than 30 states that require masks, most recently Indiana, D.C. and Arkansas.  NEII continues to track COVID-19 requirements in the US and Canada. See the latest here or check on the NEII website.

In addition, NEII has been in contact with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as they prepare to release official guidance to prevent the transmission of COVID-19 in elevators and on escalators. The recommendations NEII compiled in March have been helpful to the CDC and we are assured their official guidance will be in alignment.

NEII's Revised Cybersecurity Guide Now Available

NEII has released its revised Elevator & Escalator Industry Cybersecurity Best Practices. First released in April of 2019, the best practices were developed by cybersecurity and codes experts from NEII member companies, alongside experienced cybersecurity professionals from Europe, the Pacific Asia Lift and Escalator Association (PALEA) and the China Elevator Association (CEA). The new edition resulted from a collaborative effort with cybersecurity experts outside of the industry, most notably Symantec, a division of Broadcom.

The Elevator and Escalator Industry Cybersecurity Best Practices has become a necessity as building transportation systems have become an integrated part of complex modern buildings with multiple controllers and processors, monitoring systems accessing the internet, and wi-fi capable communication systems. While such connectivity takes elevators and escalators to new levels in availability, efficiency and general building safety, it also presents exposures to the world of cyber threats. These industry best practices were developed to provide guidance for manufacturers and maintenance providers of elevators and escalators.

Last year, NEII contacted, Symantec, a division of Broadcom about the possibility of conducting a peer review of the best practices. Symantec is a global leader in the cybersecurity arena with years of experience dealing with cybersecurity threats.  Symantec’s review identified some areas where the best practices could be enhanced and worked with NEII’s task group to complete revisions to the document.

Several improvements were made to the best practices.  One of the improvements was to reformat it more towards a standardization format, including the addition of a terminology section. Another change was to make it more understandable to persons who are not elevator and escalator experts. Changes were made to the sections on operational cybersecurity and to elaborate on defense in depth which deals with redundancy. The revised document was released in July 2020 and is available on the NEII website.
